How We Design

At Heard Landscapes we design with these things in mind

Create Living Space

Designing gardens which reflect and offer new possibilities to your way of living.

Embrace Character

Drawing out the existing character of your space and weave in new narratives.

Make Space For Nature

Enriching garden designs as part of your and nature’s home.

Our Process

Our entire design process revolves around meticulous attention to detail, ensuring your outdoor space reflects your unique way of living.

  • We will come to visit your garden and provide an initial consultation as the first step of our garden design process. We can explore ideas and discuss how you would like to use your garden and get to know one another. This collaborative information will form the basis of the design brief and will lead us into discussions about budget and timeframes.

The consultation fee is £200 and is redeemable against fees at later stages should you choose to move forward with our garden design services.

  • Every garden design we undertake starts with a full site survey. This provides us with all the information we need to identify site constraints and start to form a tailor-made design for your space. Alongside the survey, we also take photographs, identify key views, study the way the sun moves around the garden, and assess existing trees and planting. As part of this visit, we have a follow-up meeting with you to finalise the garden design brief and firm up a budget.

We will take all the information from the site visits and brief to create a design that harmonises with your space. You can expect to see a coloured concept plan to show you the overall layout of the garden together with 3D perspective images so you can really get a feel for how the garden will look from all angles. This is normally accompanied by ‘mood board’ images to illustrate the character of the planting and the types of materials we might use.

  • Once a concept garden design is agreed upon and signed off, the next stage is to create a pack of construction drawings to detail exactly how the site is to be arranged, the features constructed and the specified materials. These are usually a series of precise computer-aided drawings for the contractors to follow and use to price the job accurately.

  • The detailed construction drawings, based on the agreed garden design, are sent to potential contractors to allow them to produce costings for building the garden. We may either have a preferred supplier for your area or we would contact up to 3 contractors and invite them to tender for the contract.

  • Once construction commences, we oversee the build through to completion. We have regular site meetings with the contractors to ensure that the design is being built as specified. We are also on hand to deal with any issues that arise and make revisions to the garden design if necessary. You will be consulted before any design changes are made and any additional costs incurred will be agreed upon beforehand.

  • We can specify, select and source all plants, ensuring that they are delivered safely and in good condition as part of the garden design process. Planting can be a phased operation and is predominantly done in the autumn, winter and spring months in the United Kingdom. We aim to create bespoke mixes and blends of planting, unique to each garden.

“Becca has been amazing to work with, start to finish. She totally understood our vision, created fabulous mood boards and concepts which really allowed us to visualise the space.”

Unveiling Creativity in our Garden Design

We firmly stand by the principle that a garden should engage all your senses.

We can achieve this through textural planting, atmospheric lighting, or carefully considered water features, all integrated seamlessly into the garden design. The gentle rustling of leaves, the soothing sound of water and the refreshing fragrance of flowers are all part of the immersive experience we aim to create.

Your garden should be a place you can enjoy throughout the year, which is why our designs go beyond just planting to create a holistic living space year round.

More than just garden designers

Every garden tells a story.

Whether you have an urban garden in East London or a sprawling estate in Surrey, each garden is important and unique to the people who spend time there. We are more than just garden designers; we take the time to get to know you, resulting in bespoke designs that reflect your history, personality and quirks.
